Description: Tuition Funding Sources (TFS) is the world's largest scholarship database. The site is privately owned by Pepsi-Cola and students can become members by registering through a list of pre-approved schools. Only high schools are listed on the registration list and the site is geared for students to use before going away to college. TFS boasts that since they are a privately operated database they do not sell any names or information, nor do they advertise anywhere on the site. TFS asks students to fill out a questionnaire to find the best scholarships for them. They also provide a college search feature, a career aptitude test and career guidance, federal financial aid information, online degrees, and information on loans.
Evaluation: TFS is super simple to use. High school juniors and seniors are going to be interested in learning more about what options are available out there for them in order to pay for college. The site is clean looking without all the ads that normally clutter up scholarship sites. Students don't have to spend a lot of time before they are given a list of applicable scholarships. Each scholarship has a detailed information sheet which includes a description, eligibility requirements, contact information, award amount, deadlines, and even how many awards are available. Lots of other resources to prepare for college are also given.
Why I Included This Database: Having an easy to navigate, clutter free scholarship and college tuition site is a must have for any youth department in the library. Sites like TFS might mean the difference between a student being able to go to college and not. By providing access to TFS, librarians and teachers can quickly help students find the appropriate resources for their individual needs.
